ICE GUARDS FOR METAL ROOFS

In Ontario (Canada), heavy snowfalls and freezing rains are very common. Once snow begins to slide off your metal roof, it can cause significant damage to the roof, eavestroughs, landscaping, vehicles and pedestrians below. Roof snow guards and ice guards for metal roofs are designed to keep snow on your roof until it can safely melt and dissipate.

If you are constantly dealing with snow avalanches or falling ice, metal snow guards are the perfect snow retention system for both residential and commercial roofs. At Metal Roofing St. Catharines, we are full service snow stoppers installers for metal roofs in St. Catharines. The snow guards we use are tested to withstand even the heaviest snow loads.

When installing snow stops on metal roofs, our installers precisely lay the guards in staggered rows over your roof. By staggering the metal snow guards, it distributes the weight of the snow evenly on the roof. Each guard is firmly attached directly to the roof surface.

POPULAR QUESTIONS

Got a question? We're here to help!

Where should snow guards be placed on a metal roof?Snow guards should always be installed on the roof's lower half. Snow guards for metal roofs can be installed in a straight line or staggered in multiple rows, depending on the system.

How many snow guards do I need on my roof?- For roofs sloped more than 2/12 and up to 6/12, install two rows or sets of staggered guards, two feet on center.
- For roofs sloped at 6/12 and steeper, install two rows or sets of snow guards in straight lines (not staggered) across the roof eaves.
- For metal loop wire type snow hooks or snow guards, since these devices have a smaller surface area compared to flat or bar type snow guards, they need to be installed in multiple staggered rows over half or more of the roof surface.
- For snow brakes, snow fences or snow rails, install a single continuous system across the roof eaves, about 1 to 3 feet above the eavestroughs.

How long do metal snow guards last? The service life of stainless steel or copper snow guards is comparable to the service life of a metal roof, i.e. over 50 years.

How much do metal roof snow guards cost? While we highly recommend steel roof snow guards, plastic snow guards cost around $3.00 - $7.00 per part and metal snow guards cost $5.00 - $20 per part.

What are the best snow guards for metal roofs?Snow guards are commonly made of stainless steel, zinc-coated steel, copper, or aluminium, but polycarbonate and plastic are also options. Our roofing experts strongly recommend installing zinc-coated steel guards because they are heavy-duty, long-lasting, and inexpensive. Snow guards made of plastic or polycarbonate will eventually break, chip, and fracture.

TYPES OF METAL SNOW GUARDS

When it comes to snow guards for metal roofs, there are three different types (snow guards, fence-style and bar-style snow guards). The type of snow guard your roof needs depends on a number of factors. All snow guards will prevent snow and ice from avalanching, but certain ones will work better for different slopes and styles of roofing. Let's take a look at each style below.

SNOW GUARDS

When people think of “snow guards”, these guards commonly come to mind. They are individual units that are attached in a staggered pattern, usually to the flat part of the metal roof but can sometimes be clamped to the seam. To keep them in place, they can be adhered with liquid adhesive, tape or screws. Snow guards are suitable for use on standing seam metal roofs, through fastened metal panel roofs, and most metal shingles.

Snow guards go by a wide range of names, including snow cleats, snow birds, snow pads, and snow stops. They are available in a variety of sizes, the most common being small (less than 4 square inches) and large profile snow guards (more than 4 square inches). Metal, steel and plastic are the most common snow guard materials.

SMALL PROFILE SNOW GUARDS

A small profile snow guard's pad area (face) is less than 4 square inches in length. This type acts as a frictional force to hold snow in place. Small snow guards are usually installed in a staggered pattern, beginning at the bottom of the roof and working their way up. In general, the density of small profile snow guards installed near the bottom is higher, with a lower density higher up.

LARGE PROFILE SNOW GUARDS

Large profile snow guards have a pad face that is more than 4 square inches in size and function as a snow movement barrier (more like a snow fence). Some large profile snow guards have pad face areas as large as 15 square inches.

This type of snow guard is typically installed in a straight or slightly staggered row 12" from the eave edge. Additional rows may be required for steeper pitches, longer eave-to-peak dimensions, and roofs with higher maximum snow loads.

BAR STYLE SNOW GUARDS

This type of snow guard is a continuous length of rectangular metal "bar" installed horizontally across the metal roof to form a snow and ice barrier. With their streamlined modern styling, Bar-Style snow guards look very clean on the roof. Depending on the pitch of the roof, the distance from the eave to the peak, and the snow load present, only one row is often needed. Some projects will require several rows to handle the load.

To attach these snow guards onto a roof, installers secure brackets by either screwing them onto the decking or clamping them to the seams (only with a standing seam roof). The bar is then attached to the brackets and firmly set in place.

FENCE STYLE SNOW GUARDS

Fence-style snow guards are comparable to bar-style snow guards, but instead of a single bar, these systems have two or more vertically oriented tubes (similar to a split rail fence). Fence-style snow guards are popular on custom homes and in cases where the home or business owner prefers a more traditional appearance.

Most fence-style snow guard systems are extremely durable. These are widely used in alpine areas where snow loads exceed 75 pounds per square foot and can be much higher.
